More Lessons Learned

Marketers and channels who work with builders, the ones to succeed and keep profitable in this economy are the ones who can successfully and patiently show that the builders’ interests are being served. You can’t just sell ad space but instead must take the time to show and prove results. Builders have to start taking advantage of everything the web can do, and may be slow to move, so working in this space means proving results with some hand-holding and ever-present flexibility.

There are lots of amazing opportunities out there. The right combination of web smarts and flexibility will make these opportunities realized.

Momentum

The foot traffic is slowing down a bit but everybody stopping by the IBS booth is super interested. We’re really happy to be hearing such interest and enthusiasm for New Home Feed from builders like Shea Homes and Mattamy Homes. These companies and many others have come to the booth because of a targeted builder eBlast. This in addition to the registrations for more info coming in from the website. Lesson learned: a good, well-written and well-timed eBlast will get the attention of your audience.

Its clear to us that New Home Feed really does solve a major builder problem and we’re psyched to see all this interest and enthusiasm. What a great sense of validation.

Our Friends

An important goal of New Home Feed and this blog is to form a community of smart, savvy marketers in the home building and real estate space. As such we are offering a series of real estate marketing white papers and guest blog posts. Many of these will be offered by friends from other smart agencies and channels. We plan to contact folks we know for contributions, and we hope to be contacted by folks we don’t know as well. If you have ideas you would like to see covered here or would like to contribute, do let us know in the comments.

Great Seminar

Took a short break from the booth to attend a truly excellent seminar hosted by Myers Barnes, featuring Jim Adams of New Homes Directory and Tom Nelson of NDG Communications. It is always useful to hear what real innovators have to say about the home builder and real estate space, especially when it comes to techniques for selling homes in this economy. Some highlights:

Myers Barns gave a rousing talk with so many valuable lessons, one big one being that those who look at the market and create something that solves a need are the ones who excel over the ones who look at existing companies and try to adapt them. Builders who see that 90% of web traffic comes from the web and adapt, rather than those who continue to hunker down in the old ways of, for example, ads in the Sunday paper are the ones who will get out of this and really succeed.

Then Jim Adams delivered a clear and very useful lesson on what the web can do for builders, and how to prioritize and really have a holistic web presence. He covered everything from the search engines to social media to content distribution in a really clear and intuitive way.

Finally Tom Nelson explained how to understand what you want your web visitors to do (get directions, share contact info, see plans), and then compel these visitors to take the desired steps.

At the turn of the last century, somebody making parts for a horse-drawn carriage could keep at it, or think about working on these new-fangled automobiles. History shows the right decision. Builders face a similar change: adapt, or not adapt – but the consequences for not are clear.

So much to learn from innovate people like these. We hope to make available more content in the form of white papers or case studies from each of these three excellent speakers. Stay tuned…
