Walk Score – more localized search goodness

Great find by the good folks over at AgentGenius!  Walk Score, rates, on a scale of 0 -100, your neighborhood based on how many things (bars, restaurants, grocery stores, banks, etc) are within walking distance of your house/office/street corner. This is great for people moving to neighborhoods they’ve never been to, or even to discover new things around the corner from you!

Video Optimization tips from The Google.

The Google News Blog, was kind enough to bless us all with a series of tips to optimizing your online videos. Being that, Google-owned, YouTube is currently the second largest search engine on the web… so these are well worth the notice.

1. Timely uploads
Videos should be uploaded as quickly as possible — this will help them reach the news homepage faster and be grouped with the most recent articles.

2. One story per video
Instead of having one video that contains multiple segments covering several different stories of the day, it’s a better user experience (and easier for us to index), when there is one story per video, and the video title is specific (not something generic like “Breaking News”). At the very least, the description of the video should match the first story in the video.

3. Categorization
If you are providing general news coverage, select YouTube category “News & Politics” (which is youtube_category_id 25) when uploading your video. If you have multiple channels, clearly identify each category (politics, business, entertainment, sports, etc.).

4. More detailed descriptions
Similar to the first paragraph of a news article, descriptions of the news video should convey the who, what, when, where, and why of the story in a few sentences — the more detail you can supply, the better.

5. Rich tags
Another way to convey the content of the video is using the keyword tags. Providing keywords that might not be in the description gives us more knowledge of what the video is about. Especially helpful are proper nouns: the names of the people, places, companies, etc. mentioned in the video.

6. Make it Embeddable
Be sure your video is embeddable on other sites since this is currently a technical requirement for being displayed in Google News. Additionally, if your videos are geo-blocked in certain regions, they will not appear in Google News.

If your news organization isn’t already making its video content available on YouTube and Google News, we encourage you to get started. More information on how to submit your news videos to Google News can also be found in the News Publishers Help Center, and you can watch this video for additional tips on news search engine optimization.

Online Ad Spends Continue to Grow

Paidcontent.org points us to yet another example of growth in the online ad space.Within the article, we learn that online ad spending rose 7.5% in Q1 to $5.9 billion. Perhaps more interesting to the folks over here and our clients is that the, “biggest leaps in spending will continue to come from smaller segments of the industry, particular, video, which IDC expects to grow 40 percent, and mobile online ad, which could soar 97 percent from last year.”

As I’m sure you’ve already noticed Google’s homepage has been changed to honor the 30th Anniversary of one of the oldest video games of all time; Namco’s Pac-Man. And of course, the header is completely playable.

The New Top 20 Real Estate Websites

According to HitWise, via the good people at PropertyPortalWatch, the list of Top 20 Real Estate sites has had movement that should be taken note of:

The top 10 US real estate websites in terms of visits in April, and their previous positions, were:

The big winners between 11th and 20th place were redfin.com, which finally managed to move further into the top 20, and real estate and car portal connectwithlife.com, which jumped from 49th to 20th position:

The top five most popular real estate search terms for the month were “realtor.com”, “zillow”, “apartments for rent”, “real estate”, and “remax”.

The Top 6 have remained static, but the arrival of rentals.com, and mynewplace.com in the Top 10, is telltale that the rental market is growing, at least in the online space.  Kudos to both of these great listing companies!

21 Rules of Engagement – thanks @mashable

Just came across this great list of guidelines for effective social media strategy from the good folks at Mashable.

1. Discover all relevant communities of interest and observe the choices, challenges, impressions, and wants of the people within each network.

2. Don’t just participate solely in your own domains (Facebook Fan Page, Twitter conversations related to your brand, etc.). Participate where your presence is advantageous and mandatory.

3. Determine the identity, character, and personality of the brand and match it to the persona of the individuals representing it online.

4. Establish a point of contact who is ultimately responsible for identifying, trafficking, or responding to all things that can affect brand perception.

5. As in customer service, representatives require training to learn how to proactively and reactively respond across multiple scenarios. Don’t just put the person familiar with social networking in front of the brand.
