Year of the Rabbit – 2011

Happy New Year! Hope everyone’s holidays were fantastic! And now that you’re rested, re-energized, and ready to rock in 2011, let’s see what the stars have in store for us this – the Year of the Rabbit – 2011.

According to Chinese tradition, the Rabbit brings a year in which you can catch your breath and calm your nerves.  It is a time for negotiation.  Don’t try to force issues, because if you do you will ultimately fail.  To gain the greatest benefits from this time, focus on home, family, security, diplomacy, and your relationships with women and children.   Make it a goal to create a safe, peaceful lifestyle, so you will be able to calmly deal with any problem that may arise.

I’m in the listing bidness…

… and brother, bidness is a boomin’

It’s not news that every day more and more people are turning to the internet as their main source for finding a new home, but are those sites ready to deliver? The good folks at 1000Watt Consulting put up a great post about the quality of listing information that is on all these sites.

People are flocking to the listing sites like Zillow and Trulia, but when they get there can they be guaranteed quality/accurate listing information? 1000Watt blogger Brian Boero gives us a quick, and hilarious, hypothetical scenario in which a prospective home buyer finds their dream home – only to have those dreams dashed against the rocks due to inaccurate listing info. Nooooo!!

Fret not – we have the answer.

New Home Feed helps builders make sure that their listing information is the accurate across the board, and you can also quickly see what you may have forgotten to enter – all from a single control panel!

Congrats SF Giants!! #sfgiants

NHF-Logo-Final-GIANTS

As you may or may not know New Home Feed is a San Francisco based company, and we are elated that our team, The San Francisco Giants, brought home the World Series championship!  From our office right now we can hear the cheers, blaring car horns, and I’m pretty sure I heard some Vuvuzelas coming from the column of people who are making their way from the CalTrain station down to the Champions Parade on Market Street.

For those of you trapped in your offices who want to watch the Parade Festivities, CSNBayArea is live streaming the parade here. Go Giants!

November already?!

nov-one

Seems like the year is just flying by, but fret not – there is still time left in the year to get things done.  For example, on this day in…

1512 - Michelangelo’s famous Sistine Chapel ceiling is exhibited for the first time
1604 - Shakespeare’s Othello is presented for the first time in London
1765 - British Parliament enacts the stamp act … in retrospect, perhaps not the best idea.
1800 - John Adams becomes the first President to live in the White House.
1946 - Ansel Adams takes what is to become one his most photographs ever; Moonrise.
1982 - Honda becomes the first Asian automaker to produce cars in the United States.

See! Plenty of time in the year to make great things happen. What will you accomplish today?

New Home Feed is Hiring!

Candidate should have strong programming skills in PHP, Javascript, and a willingness to learn Coldfusion.
You should be able to:
Take a PSD and create good cross-browser HTML and CSS from it.  You’re comfortable with CSS3.  You can also complain about how the designer is using too many gradients.
Use Javascript (we like jQuery!) to create the dynamic aspects of the page.  You can write ajax interactions and you use Firebug or something similar to do your testing.
Write the server-side code to handle page interactions (we use PHP and Coldfusion).  You are allowed to treat Coldfusion with disdain.
Write code within an MVC framework, and/or have a background in OOP.  You can write code that is extensible.
Use source control (we use git) but are not fanatical about it (we sometimes don’t use git).
Design database tables from an informal specification.  You can write and debug MySQL queries.
Do some Linux server admin. You are comfortable configuring Apache and setting up crontab. You are also comfortable googling when you can’t remember how mod_rewrite works.
Do some IIS server admin. If you really have to.  Or at least you can figure it out.
Requirements:
3 years of experience creating dynamic, database driven websites
3 years of programming experience in PHP
Intermediate proficiency with MySQL and database design. Candidates should know the basics of SQL.
Mastery of HTML
Basic knowledge of CSS
Experience with javascript, including the use of Ajax using either Prototype.js or JQuery
A relaxed attitude, open-mindedness, and ability to adapt and roll with the flow
Great written and verbal communication skills
Bonus Skills:
Linux server administration skills
Proficiency in Flash
Experience using any web development framework, such as Zend, Smarty, Cake, Fusebox, etc.
Keep-It-Simple philosophy
