How up to date are you? #realestate

The folks over at Hydundai have released this great commercial about technology over the ages, coupled with the great tagline,

“What if we always settled for the first thing that came along?”

This speaks volumes for the online world of real estate. This isn’t to discount the old ways, but we must take the lessons from the past and then build on them to be prepared for everything.

AOL Gobbles up TechCrunch

With all this partnership and acquisition news banging around the interwebs it’s starting to feel like watching the tectonic plates shifting around, but this time to re-form Pangea.  Too nerdy of a reference for you? Pangea was the super continent that existed millions and billions of years ago, that eventually shifted and broke up to form the continents as we know them today…

Today AOL announced that they’ve purchased the influential web startup reporting technology blog TechCrunch for some $30Million – increasing their online portfolio and reach.  Microsoft teaming up with WordPress, running Yahoo’s search… It will be interesting to see where all these puzzle piece land when the next Age of the Internet begins.

Street Slide – Microsoft’s next level street view

With what seems like a multilevel guerrilla attack against the seemingly unchallenged technologies offered by Google over the last 5 years, Microsoft unveils its answer to StreetView, cleverly named “Street Slide”. I must admit, the Bing wasn’t so impressive, but this is pretty amazing. Score one for the BalmyBalmer!

Zillow forms exclusive partnership with Yahoo!
Real Estate

yazihoolow

Zahoo? Yillow? Yazihoollow? Regardless of excellent name amalgamating opportunities this business merger between the second and third largest real estate websites is huge news for the online real estate game.  In a move similar to the Bing + Yahoo! search merge, Zillow will begin feeding Yahoo! Real Estate it’s some 4 Million listings and it’s Zestimate home values by this Fall 2010.  Excerpt from the Zillow blog:

Heads up agents, brokers, home shoppers, home sellers and builders — we have exciting news to share with you.

Today, Yahoo! Real Estate and Zillow announced an exclusive partnership that will offer advertisers a single channel to reach across both sites. Zillow will exclusively sell advertising to real estate agents and brokers on Yahoo! Real Estate and Zillow will supply its 4 million for-sale listings, as well as Zestimate® home values, to Yahoo! Real Estate, creating a convenient one-stop advertising solution that brings together the second-and third-largest real estate websites.

Once the integration of listings from Zillow is complete this fall, all for-sale listings on Yahoo! Real Estate will be provided by Zillow, which will give agents and brokers significantly more exposure for their listings and their advertisements.

Good things @zillow ! I’m sure there will be more developments to this, so stay tuned!

Walk Score – more localized search goodness

Great find by the good folks over at AgentGenius!  Walk Score, rates, on a scale of 0 -100, your neighborhood based on how many things (bars, restaurants, grocery stores, banks, etc) are within walking distance of your house/office/street corner. This is great for people moving to neighborhoods they’ve never been to, or even to discover new things around the corner from you!

21 Rules of Engagement – thanks @mashable

Just came across this great list of guidelines for effective social media strategy from the good folks at Mashable.

1. Discover all relevant communities of interest and observe the choices, challenges, impressions, and wants of the people within each network.

2. Don’t just participate solely in your own domains (Facebook Fan Page, Twitter conversations related to your brand, etc.). Participate where your presence is advantageous and mandatory.

3. Determine the identity, character, and personality of the brand and match it to the persona of the individuals representing it online.

4. Establish a point of contact who is ultimately responsible for identifying, trafficking, or responding to all things that can affect brand perception.

5. As in customer service, representatives require training to learn how to proactively and reactively respond across multiple scenarios. Don’t just put the person familiar with social networking in front of the brand.
